Welcome to Second GradeHere we'll keep you posted on what's happening in our second grade classrooms. If you ever have questions or concerns, please contact us and we'll be happy to discuss them with you. 2-20-12 Week At A GlanceReading/Language: This week we begin Lesson 21" A Chair for My Mother". We will focus on plot which is what happens during the begining, middle and end of a story. The students will also learn about present -tense action verbs. Cheeseburger Book Reports are due Friday! Math: We are halfway through unit 6. We have been spending a lot of time teaching and practicing the steps to solve 2 and 3 digit subtraction problems which require you to borrow from the tens place. Please help your child at home by again showing them how you learned how to do this when you were little and by giving them some practice problems to solve every night. Also this week, we will introduce multiplication as repeated addition and will solve number stories where the children will have to draw arrays to help them solve. See the homelink on Thursday for more information. Religion: We continue to work on chapter 11 and will be focusing on the church season of Lent. We will also focus on the signs of Lent: prayer, fasting and alms giving. Every Friday we will be going into church for Stations of the Cross. Science: We begin learning about specific inventors this week and will discuss how the world has been impacted by the inventions made. We will also learn the difference between invention and innovation in preparation for your child's first science at home project. More information coming soon. Social Studies: The students will learn about the life of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.
2-13-12 Week At A GlanceReading/Language: This is another review week. We will be working on Lesson 20 - a Reader's Theater called "What's My Job?". Because of the short week, we will not be opening up the reader's theater to any parents. We will only be performing in front of each other. Your children will be bringing home their scripts probably Tuesday. Please have them read their lines aloud every night to you. The more practice the better. Math:We will be introducing and working on the key strategy to solving 2 and 3 digit numbers in the subtraction process. Your children will learn a rhyme which should help them to know when to borrow from the ten's place: More on the top- no need to stop. More on the floor - borrow ten more. If the number is the same - zero is my name. Religion: We begin Chapter 11 - " We Act on God's Words". The children will learn about Jesus's many Works of Mercy. Science: We will finish up our solar system unit on Monday and will begin our next unit on Thursday - Inventors/Inventions. Social Studies: This week we will learn about caring for our resources and how we can conserve them. Your child has received his or her landform. Please let me know if you have any questions on the project. 2-6-12 Week At A GlanceReading/Language: This week we will be working on Lesson 19 and will learn about the life of George Washington Carver. This is another non-fiction story and has a lot of story details. Please ask your child to bring home their reading books every night to read the story to you. We will also review resources which we can use to locate information. Last week we learned about a dictionary, a thesaurus, an atlas, a map, the Internet and an encyclopedia. We will continue to learn about these resources this week.
Math:Unit 6 Family Letter will come home this week. Miss Raab forgot (sorry). We continue to work in unit 6 and will focus on learning the steps to subtracting two 2-digit numbers - ie 53-29 or 44-20. Please help your child at home by showing them how you learned to solve these problems.
Religion: We are finishing up Chapter 10 this week. The students in 2B will have a test on Thursday February 9th and 2R students will have the test on Friday February 10th. A study guide will come home on Tuesday the 7th.
Science: The children will culminate our solar system unit this week by going on a solar system fact scavenger hunt. Ask them for more information on Thursday. On Tuesday, ask to see their moon rocks.
Social Studies: We continue to learn about our natural resources and ways to take care for our earth. Your child will be bringing home their landform project letter this week. If you have any questions just e-mail me. 1-30-12 Week At A GlanceReading/Language: This week will will be working on lesson 18: "Ah Music!" We will be working on locating information through a variety of resources: atlas, encyclopedia, internet, map, dictionary, thesaurus, table of contents, non fiction books and index. We also continue to learn about adjectives and will focus on number words this week. Math: We are finishing up unit 5 this week by taking a test on Wednesday 2-1-12. Study guide will come home on Monday. We will begin unit 6 on Thursday and the unit Family Letter will come home then as well. Religion: We continue working in Chapter 10 - Listening to God's Word. We learn about the scripture story "The Sower and the Seed". Also, the students will be learning about the parts of the mass specifically Liturgy of the Word. Science: This week we will be learning about moon phases and words associated with the moon (lunar). Social Studies: We continue our Geography unit.
